Reading Notes: Mahabharata, Part A

- King named Uparichara, king of Chedi
- Gods thought he wanted their power so they sent Indra to bribe him with a crystal car.
- He was flying through the sky and his semen fell into the river and was swallowed by a fish
- The fish had two children when caught by a fisherman. A boy and a girl
- The king took the boy, but the girl was reared by the fisherman's wife.
- Girl was pretty, but smelled fishy
- Her name was Satyavati
- Rishi persuaded the girl to yield to him and promised she would remain a virgin and lose her smell
- She smelt so good you could smell her seven miles away
- A child was born on an island, Vyasa.
- Devavrata, or Bhishma, son of King Shantanu and goddess Ganga.
- The son had the power of the eight gods known as Vasus
- King Shantanu falls in love with Satyavati after being deserted by  the goddess Ganga.
- Devavrata vowed to never become king if Satyavati would go be his fathers queen
- The gods gave him the name Bhishma, which means terrible, since the vow he made was indeed bad.
- Satyavati gave the king two sons: Chitrangada and Vichitravirya.
- Chitrangada was king for a brief time, but was a bad ruler, so Vichitravirya was given the throne, but since he was just a boy, Bhishma acted as a regent for some years.
- Bhishma seized three wives for his brother
-  Amba, the eldest of the three princesses, longed for another man, so they let her go to him, and the other two become wives of Bhishma
- Amba made a great funeral pyre. She enters it while saying that she is doing this for the destruction of Bhishma.
- Vyasa became king, but could not have a son without defects.
- Dharma, god of Justice, reincarnated as Vidura, one of the sons.
- Bhishma reared the sons and taught them.
- Pandu became king.
- Married two wives, Kunti and Madri
- Kunti was mother of a son Karna
- Kunti put her son in a basket and sent him down the river
- Was picked up by Radha, who could not have kids and her prayers were answered.
- Karna grew up to become powerful
- A sage was in the form of a deer and was killed by Pandu.
- He cursed him to never have sons
- Kunti gave Madri a charm that gave her sons. They became known as the Pandava brothers.
- Pandu dies in Madri's arms
- The blind brother took over the throne and had 100 sons that became known as the Kauravas.
- When the eldest son Duryodhana was born, violent fires broke out and animals cried to the sound of his crying.
- The counselors told him to abandon his eldest son for this was a sign that he would be evil.
- He couldn't abandon him
- Kunti raises the Pandavas alone for awhile, then brings them the Pandu's royal city where Dhritarashtra raises them with his own sons
- Duryodhana poisoned Bhima and bond him and sent him down the river.
- He ends up in the underworld where the nagas grant him the power of 1000 of them
- Bhishma wanted a teacher for the boys, he chooses Drona
- Drona's childhood friend Drupada, rejected his offering to share his heavenly weapons
- No longer friends
- Pandavas excel as Drona's students, and Duryodhana becomes more jealous
- The three eldest are Yudhishthria, Bhima, and Arjuna.
- Pandavas and Kauravas display their skills in tournament
- A mock fight between Bhima and Duryodhana grows serious
- Arjuna comes in a displays the greatest skills among all of the princes.
- Karna shows up to the tournament and displays great skills
- Arjuna and Karna do not realize that they are brothers
- Karna fears Arjuna's powers and becomes angry. Duryodhana takes Karna to his own palace.
- Now that the boys are trained, Drona wants them to pay the price. His price is to help him get revenge on his childhood friend Drupada who ended their friendship
- Seeing all the success of the Pandavas, Duryodhana gets even more jealous and decides to get rid of the Pandavas and their mother, Kunti by setting the palace on fire.
