Reading Notes: Ramayana, Part C

- Sugriva sees the brothers coming and is alarmed because he thinks they are after him
- He asks Hanuman to disguise himself to go see what they wanted
- Hanuman promised to help them find Sita and took them to Sugriva
- Sugriva tells Rama his story, and Rama agrees to help him
- Tara, Vali's wife begs him not to fight Sugriva knowing that he is with Rama, but he denies and goes to fight them.
- Vali starts to fight Sugriva, but is killed by Rama who ambushed him from a bush where Vali could not see him.
- Tara and Sugriva morn of Vali's death. As do all the monkeys of the kingdom.
- Sugriva becomes king
- After Sugriva becomes king, he agrees to help Rama find Sita, but they have to wait until the Rainy season is over. Since Rama cannot enter a city, he waits in the forest but becomes impatient.
- The rainy season ends, but Rama is upset the Sugriva isn't taking any action.
- Lakshmana goes to remind Sugriva the promises he made to Rama, so he sends 4 armies of monkeys and bears to help search for Sita.
- One group that is headed in the right direction has a list of places to search that includes Tamraparni, which is actually the Island of Lanka.
- The brother of the bird Jatayu, Sampati, tells the group that they are headed in the right direction because Ravana had taken Sita to Lanka.
- Jambavan influences Hanuman to make the jump by telling him about his birth and his special powers, and during his jump, encounters a demon that tries to eat him
- Hanuman makes it to Lanka, and lurks the city
- He finds Ravana's palace and finds his bedroom. Ravana is there sleeping, but he cant find Sita.
- Hanuman finally finds Sita in a grove of ashoka trees, but she is guarded by a group of demons.
- Hanuman hides in a tree as he watches Sita.
- He sees Ravana try to persuade Sita to reject her current husband Rama, and take him as her husband.
- Hanuman finally approaches Sita, but she thinks that it is Ravana in the form of him.
- He shows her a ring of Rama to prove its him.
- He offers to carry her away, but she declines because she promised to never touch a man besides Rama.
- Ravana's son, Indrajit, captures Hanuman, and brings him to Ravana bound.
- Since Ravana can't kill Hanuman since he is an envoy, he catches his tail on fire.
- Hanuman scorched the whole city
- The expedition made camp and started to come up with a plan to get across the ocean.
- Ravana's court decides to fight Rama instead of giving up Sita
- Vibhishana, Ravana's younger brother, begs him to give Sita back and not fight, but Ravana does not agree. Vibhishana joins Rama.
