Reading Notes: Babbitt. Jataka Tales, Part B

- Two different merchants trying to sell goods and were both ready at the same time.
- one merchant, who goes first is tricked by demons out in the desert.
- The second merchant is wise, and realizes the men are demons and out smarts the demons.
- There is an elephant, who is always good and would never hurt anyone. "Girly-Face"
- Some robbers talk where the elephant can hear the bad talk and starts acting out killing people.
- The king send someone who figures out what happens, fixes the situation, and it all stops.
- A king likes to hunt deer. So they make a park for the deer and shut them in there.
- Everyday the king or the cook comes to kill them. The two deer kings make a pack.
- One deer at a time from each of the two king deer's herds will go.
- Lands on a mothering deer and the deer king shows mercy.
- This mercy keeps the king from ever killing another single deer.
- A king has 3 suns. He tells his wife that when the third son is born he will give her a boon.
- Once the third is born and turns 21 she asks for the boon. For him to become king.
- The king refuses then becomes worried she will harm his other son. He sends them away.
- The youngest goes with them. The two youngest are taken by a water-sprite.
- The oldest saves them then they rule the kingdom together.
- Carpenters see that an elephant has a sore foot and realizes he has a splinter. they remove it.
- Once the carpenters do this for the elephant he works for them and they take care of him well.
- This elephant has a son and shows him how to work for the carpenters because he has gotten old.
- The king sees this elephant who is all white and pays a great price for him then takes great care of him.
- There was two oxes that carted all of the labor.
- The younger ox became jealous of the pig because he ate choice food.
- The older ox told him to not be envious because the pig would die and the pig did.
- Granny received a baby elephant and took care of this elephant. He never did any work.
- He saw how hard granny worked and decided to go make money for granny.
- He brought back money and granny was happy. from then on he did all the work.
- A crane tricks a pond a fishes into believing he will take them to another one.
- The cranes eats all of the fish and tells a crab he will take him.
- the smart crab takes hold of the cranes neck and once the crane shows his true colors the crab pinches the neck which takes the cranes head off.
- Humans granted themselves a king, as did every other species.
- Except birds they had finally decided on an owl but the crows did not like this.
- They chase each other everyday and the birds ended up deciding a turtle dove as king.
